Effective Monday, March 10, the process for obtaining a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) for work within the Key West Historic District has changed.
Applicants must now apply for a Certificate of Appropriateness separately from a building permit application for any applicable work within the Historic District.
Previously, the Building Department served as a one-stop location for permit applications, coordinating internal reviews by licensed plan examiners, the floodplain manager, and the Historic Preservation (HARC) team. As a result, many applicants may not have realized that a COA review was part of the permit process.
Going forward, while Building Department staff will continue to provide excellent customer service, COA applications must be submitted as a separate process. You can apply in person at the permit technician desk or, starting March 17, online through eTrakit.
