The City of Key West Planning Department is once again welcoming back James “Jim” Singelyn, as Senior Planner with a long history of community service.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Jim attended the University of Kansas on a swimming scholarship before earning his master's degree in urban planning from Eastern Michigan University. His career has taken him through Ypsilanti Township and the City of Birmingham in Michigan, Gallatin, Tennessee, and Key West, where in 2006 he first joined the Planning Department. In 2008, Jim stepped away to care for his parents, reflecting the same sense of responsibility and dedication that defines his work.
During his earlier time with the city, Jim worked on projects of every scale—from new developments and redevelopments to the everyday needs of local homeowners. He is known for his collaborative spirit, creative problem-solving, and commitment to making the planning process open and approachable for everyone.
Now, drawn back by Key West's easygoing lifestyle and welcoming community, Jim is excited to serve the city again as Senior Planner. Outside work, he enjoys beach time with his dog and getting out on the water.
