On May 22nd, Key West Mayor Danise “DeeDee” Henriquez, City Manager Brian L. Barroso and City staff met with senior staff from U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West to discuss potential operational impacts to the City if federal policy regarding travel to Cuba changes in the future.
The Coast Guard advised that there have been no changes to its current policies or procedures. The discussion remained focused on existing maritime security requirements, including the requirement that voyages to Cuba from the United States receive the appropriate permit from the Coast Guard District Office, as outlined in the Marine Safety Information Bulletin issued in March.
At this time, no immediate City action is required. Staff will continue to monitor federal guidance and coordinate with appropriate federal partners as needed. If federal travel policy regarding Cuba changes, staff will request additional coordination meetings with relevant agencies, including Treasury/OFAC, CBP Office of Field Operations, and others as appropriate.
