Minimize or prevent flood-related damages by constructing the floor elevation of a structure above the Base Flood Elevation (BFE). The BFE represents the projected elevation floodwater is expected to reach during a base flood. BFEs are indicated on Flood Insurance Rate Maps and flood profiles.
In general, elevation is a mandatory requirement, with the exception of certain commercial structures that may be eligible for dry floodproofing. New construction and substantially improved residential structures in "A" or "V" type flood zones must be elevated to at least the base flood elevation (BFE) plus an additional foot.
Freeboard is the height of a building above the Base Flood Elevation for a specific site. State and local floodplain regulations require at least one foot of freeboard for elevated structures. Each foot of freeboard may reduce flood insurance rates up to a maximum of four feet.
