Operations

Fire Operations is the core foundation of the City of Key West Fire Department.  The Operations Division is responsible for the rapid and timely delivery of emergency services to any incident that threatens or has the potential to threaten life or property.  Three strategically located fire stations house personnel and specialized equipment for fire suppression, rescue, and special operations.  An additional unmanned fire station is situated on Sunset Key.  The watches are cross-trained in various operations and are equipped to respond to all types of emergencies.

Duties

The Operations Division performs all duties related to:

  • Comprehensive fire pre-planning for high-risk and special hazard properties
  • Emergency response
  • Fire
  • Medical and hazard abatement
  • Rescue
  • Fire prevention and public education programs
  • In-service training for all personnel
  • Maintaining fire facilities, apparatus', and equipment

Shift Schedule

Each station is manned in rotating shifts.  Personnel are assigned to one of three color-coded groups, known as watches: Blue, Green and Red Watch.  Each watch works 24-hour shifts according to the shift calendar, following a one-day on, two-day off rotation, called a 24/48 schedule.  Watch Battalion Chiefs oversee daily operations across all stations during their assigned watch.
