[ARCHIVED] April is Fair Housing Month

City Seal

The City of Key West's Housing and Community Development Director, Tina Burns, wants to remind the community that April is Fair Housing Month.

This year commemorates the 56th anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act, the landmark civil rights law signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson on April 11, 1968, that made discrimination in housing transactions unlawful.  The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), disability, and familial status.  This year's Fair Housing Month theme is “Fair Housing: The 'Act’ in Action." For more information about your fair housing rights, you can visit www.hud.gov/fairhousing.

The City of Key West celebrated Fair Housing Month activities by presenting an informational session on Fair Housing rights and the federal laws prohibiting housing discrimination against residents.

Although April is dedicated to Fair Housing Month, The City of Key West pledges to honor the legacy of the Fair Housing Act while affirming our dedication to upholding Fair Housing principles year-round.
