[ARCHIVED] The City Commission Honor Robert Albury with a Proclamation

City Seal

\During the August meeting, Mayor Teri Johnston and the Key West City Commission honored one of Key West's musical sons, Robert Albury, with his day in honor of his 80th birthday.

Albury grew up in Bahama Village.  One of nine brothers with beautiful voices, Albury was inspired by Louis Armstrong after seeing him perform in Key West.

Albury formed a high school band called the Wanderers with Willis T. Hagan, Gary Moore, and lifelong friend Paulie Walterson.  They performed at the Navy NCCS Club on Whitehead Street.  Over the years, most residents and a few lucky tourists have enjoyed Albury's melodies while he rode his bike around the island singing.

"The King of Key West Soul, Robert Albury, performed five sold-out concerts with his cousin and Key West legend Coffee Butler," reads the proclamation.  "They sang a duet to Louis Armstrong's favorite song, Wonderful World."

In the photo, Albury could not attend the meeting, so his family accepted the honor, joining Commissioners Lissette Carey and Jimmy Weekley, Vice Mayor Sam Kaufman, and Commissioners Clayton Lopez and Billy Wardlow.  Commissioner Mary Lou Hoover was in attendance via Zoom.
