[ARCHIVED] Coast Guard Cutter Mohawk Cleanup

City Seal

Last year, the Coast Guard Cutter Mohawk adopted the area surrounding the Trumbo Point base under the City's Adopt-A-Spot program.  Today, Commander Andrew L. Pate and his crew met with Vice Mayor Sam Kaufman and Police Chief Sean Brandenburg to renew the pledge and to conduct a major cleanup of the area.

Vice Mayor Kaufman welcomed the crew and read a proclamation re-designating Mohawk Day, which will be formally presented at the March 7th City Commission meeting.

Mohawk Day was first proclaimed in 1991 by then-mayor Capt. Tony Tarracino when the cutter first arrived in the island city.

"The crew of the Mohawk," read Kaufman, "has provided a significant and valued addition to our schools, churches, civic organizations, economy, and the community at large for many years."

The Mohawk is the final of thirteen 270-foot medium-endurance cutters built for the US Coast Guard.  It is the namesake of the USS Mohawk, a vessel that launched 14 attacks against Nazi submarines during World War II.
