[ARCHIVED] Mayor Christens New Vessel

In a long-standing tradition, the City of Key West welcomed a new cruise ship to port by exchanging plaques and flags.  And, as a special honor, Mayor Teri Johnston was named Godmother of the ship and had the opportunity to bless and christen the American Glory.

The new 109-guest American Cruise Line luxury vessel was welcomed by business leaders, representatives of Safer Smaller Ships, and the community at a ceremony at Mallory Square on Sunday.  This was her first port call to Key West.

“It is our pleasure to welcome you to our little piece of paradise,” said Mayor Johnston. “Enjoy our island and all that we treasure as locals. I can assure you that every bar back, musician, server, and guide will do everything possible to make your visit memorable enough to return year after year.”

The ceremony was highlighted with performances by the vocal trio The Victory Belles.  City Manager Al Childress exchanged flags with the ship’s captain, and Mayor Johnston and the cruise line’s CEO Charles Robertson exchanged plaques commemorating the event.

The celebration was topped off with a trip to the American Glory's bow, where Mayor Johnston blessed the ship and broke a bottle of champagne on the bow – the official christening.  Later, Historic Tours of America's Clinton Curry displayed the island's distinct local color by playing a tune on a conch shell.
