Members of the community and City of Key West employees gathered yesterday at the Douglass Gym to recognize the retirement of the beloved Charles Major after serving the City for 31 years in Community Services.

Mr. Major was hired in 1993 as a coordinator for the Fredrick Douglass Gym.  In his three decades at the gym, he has watched children in his charge grow up and send their children to the activities at the gym.

Fittingly, he was presented with a sign in his honor that will hang in the Fredrick Douglass Community Center.  Community Services Director Marcus Davila made the presentation.

"His 31 years of service to the City and the community has been outstanding," reads the sign.  "Community events and after-school programs at the gym would not exist without him.  The kids, employees, and the community greatly appreciate his dedication, friendship, and guidance.”

Assistant City Manager Todd Stoughton also presented Mr. Major with a plaque in honor of his retirement and years of dedicated service.
